About Yoga Jivana

Who we are

Yoga Jivana means ‘yoga life’ (jivana is sanskrit for life).

The teaching faculty at Yoga Jivana have experienced the profoundly transformative effects of Iyengar Yoga and they’re always inspired to see students experience it too! This practice can bring positive change, enhancing our everyday life.

All YJ’s teachers bring their extensive experience in the discipline of Iyengar Yoga, teaching practice and related fields of health and the body to the Yoga Jivana / Yoga Life institute.

As well as regular study trips to Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI), the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India, the senior teaching faculty have taught all over the world.

You’ll experience teaching that is empathetic, positive, and focused on the needs of each individual.  As well as all levels of yoga classes, Yoga Jivana also holds Iyengar Yoga teacher training program – STTY, which has many talented graduates.

Becoming a qualified Iyengar Yoga teacher is a rigorous process involving many years of practice and study. Yoga Jivana’s teachers are members of Iyengar Yoga Australia (BKSIYAA), and are committed & dedicated practitioners and qualified teachers.

Where we are

Yoga Jivana is situated in the middle of a thriving and eclectic part of Melbourne – the space is modern, fresh, and purpose built with two yoga studio’s, toilets & change room facilities. The space is heated in winter, cool in summer and is just off High Street, home to the hip café, art and fashion heart of Northcote.

On the corner of High & Separation Streets, the building address is 2 Separation Street Northcote. We are on the 1st floor, in suite 2.

Yoga Jivana’s vision is to create a space dedicated to the discovery and practice of yoga.

A place for people to experience the essence of yogic philosophy & practice, which can provide emotional & physical balance while enhancing the inner life for all, regardless of age or life path.

Yoga Jivana is located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, and recognise that the Wurundjeri People are the traditional owners of this land.

The philosophy that guides us

tatra sthitau yatnah abhyasah YSP 1.13

The practice of yoga is the commitment to become established in the state of freedom… Iyengar Yoga is based on the *Yoga Sutra’s of Patanjali, a dynamic practical and theoretical philosophy, and the most authoritative of all the texts with 196 sutras that serve as maps for the inner journey. It is a system of life which when practiced with awareness can develop every level of our being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual – enhancing all aspects of our lives.

Yoga – the Iyengar way…

Iyengar yoga differs from other yoga in several ways:

  1. it is the most practised yoga throughout the world.
  2. it is physically strengthening, mentally engaging, emotionally fulfilling and spiritually uplifting.
  3. it is versatile & teaches awareness – not just flexibility as it enhances balance creates clarity & teaches serenity of mind.
  4. it is energising – its dynamic approach is not stagnant – teaching is adjusted for reasons such as age, gender, season, experience or degree of health.
  5. it develops understanding – within the class, throughout the month, and over the changing seasons of the year.
  6. it uses props to develop understanding – especially when one is injured or has chronic deteriorative conditions.
  7. it is a positive & empowering approach toward good health.

“Yoga is nothing if it is not perfect harmony of the body, senses, mind and intellect, reason, consciousness and self. When all these are integrated that is true Yoga.” – BKS Iyengar
